GDPR: MEP proposals will make tough situation worse

Last week MEPs agreed its negotiating position on possible changes to GDPR. The amendments aim to strengthen GDPR enforcement in complainants' rights, enforcement procedures, and cross-border matters.

The big picture: The changes to GDPR sought by MEPs will supposedly make enforcement more efficient and harmonized across the EU and address some concerns about inconsistent enforcement practices. However, business interests say that this missed the opportunity to further streamline processes, while leaving the problem of GDPR overreach.

What's next: The dossier is now referred back to committee for further negotiations in the new Parliament after the European elections. Meanwhile on Tuesday the EU’s General Court concluded hearing submissions from the Irish Data Protection authority and the EDPB reagard the Irish authorities concern that the EDPB is reading a “power that is not there” into GDPR

The HRPG Europe View: We agree with Mr Gissler and would add: …was it ever any different, especially as no one is yet addressing the serious problem of GDPR overreach.
