Topics:

It has been slow going on Capitol Hill so far, but House Democrats have begun indicating their priorities by submitting bills in health care and on increasing the minimum wage.

Health Care:  With the larger issue of expansion of the federal role looming, a number of bills have been introduced mostly focusing thus far on reducing drug prices (S.61, S.62, and H.R.275).  Both the House and Senate have scheduled hearings on the issue.

Minimum wage:  House Ed and Labor Chairman Bobby Scott (D-VA), who has long championed a minimum wage increase, introduced a measure to bump starting pay to $15 per hour by 2024 (H.R.582).  No hearings are yet on the docket, but it is Rep. Scott who sets the schedule.

Outlook:  Once the government shutdown is resolved, the new House majority is expected to hit the ground running on a number of other workplace issues, including paid leave, gender pay equity, and harassment.
