EU: One million immigrants a year needed

The EU's home Affairs Commission has said that the EU needs a million migrants annually to address demographic shortfall, as it is expected that the EU's working population will otherwise significantly decrease by 2060.

Why it matters: The EU's working-age population declines by around a million every year. The Commissioner said that 3.5 million migrants arrive lawfully every year, compared to 300,000 irregular entries.

The bottom line: Without orderly migration of approx one million working age persons per annum, the EU's working population will significantly decrease by 2060.
