Workforce Ecosystems: A New Strategic Approach...

Published on: January 1, 2022

Topics: People and Culture

This MIT Sloan/Deloitte research report is based on a fall 2020 survey of over 5,000 managers and leaders globally. The authors claim that while most companies rely on a workforce comprised of both traditional ("internal") workers and those "external" to the traditional structure, existing management practices, systems and processes are designed for internal employees. To address this, the authors propose the concept of a workforce ecosystem: " ...a structure focused on value creation for an organization that consists of complementarities and interdependencies. This structure encompasses actors from within the organization and beyond, working to pursue both individual and collective goals." The report discusses the strategic, organizational, regulatory and practical implications of a workforce made up of employees, external workers and others.
