This January, as India kicked off its massive vaccination drive, new daily cases reached their lowest point since June 2020 at approximately 12,500. Experts feel, however, that dwindling cases won’t necessarily mean the last of the virus. Instead, they say, it will evolve, reemerge, and infect scores of susceptible people, leading to a surge in cases again. Accordingly, the Prime Minister said in a televised address to the State Chief Ministers that while vaccination is going on, it is important that people do not let their guard down. With new strains of the virus being discovered in the UK, South Africa, and Brazil, it’s a watch and wait game in India to see how the virus behaves.
