Democrat Party Platform Calls For "Model Employer" Executive Order

Published on:

Topics:

The latest draft of the 2016 Democratic Party Platform calls on Hillary Clinton to issue an executive order should she win the White House that would give a contracting preference to employers that provide their employees with "a living wage, good benefits, and the opportunity to form a union."  Although Secretary Clinton previously indicated she needed to study the proposal, inclusion of the "model employer executive order" in the platform is clearly a nod to Sen. Sanders' supporters and leaders of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, who have long supported the idea.  The draft platform also calls for:
  • Card check by simple majority and binding first contract arbitration;
  • A $15 minimum wage indexed to inflation;
  • Twelve weeks of paid family and medical leave; and
  • Seven days of paid sick leave.
