HR is in a pivotal moment as we embrace Generative AI (GenAI) and its transformative potential. HR Policy Association hosted its annual CHRO-only AI Innovations virtual conference April 23-24. Attendees heard the latest recommendations on blending human-machine teams, continuous adaptation in workflows and skills, and prioritizing human capabilities. The meeting culminated with an informative “shark tank” presentation by six AI entrepreneurs who showcased their workplace applications and took questions from the audience.

Overview of AI and Tech in HR
Julie Bedard, Managing Director and Partner at The Boston Consulting Group addressed the workforce disruption that will be brought on by the integration of AI and discussed the importance of HR leaders assessing the skills that will be needed. This assessment allows HR to map the current workforce skills, identify new career paths, and determine how gaps in skills can be filled through upskilling, new hiring, and other means.

Responsible AI
In this session, J. Trevor Hughes, President and CEO of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, outlined the regulatory frameworks for AI use and suggested steps for CHROs:
  • Know what AI you are using and how you are using it
  • Understand the potential risks of each system;
  • Be clear on what data you are using;
  • Ensure you comply with current laws and regulations governing AI; and
  • Put appropriate procurement processes and contracts in place when purchasing from third parties.
Last, Hughes urged, “Talk to your privacy people!”

Putting AI to Work
Laszlo Bock, co-founder and Board Chair of Gretel, Inc. moderated a panel giving insight into learnings of two HR leaders with deep experience integrating AI in the workplace, Christopher Fernandez, Corporate VP, HR Services and Digital Employee Experiences at Microsoft and Peter Fasolo, EVP, CHRO at Johnson & Johnson, and HR Policy Director. The panelists shared their experience and lessons learned about employee adoption of AI, maintaining trust in AI systems, and job functions that require human capabilities.
