HR Policy-Supported Equality Act Reintroduced

The Association joined 43 business groups in supporting the Equality Act, which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the protected classes under the various anti-discrimination laws, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

The measure has been introduced in previous Congresses, but the level of business community support this time is noteworthy.  Even though the measure would add a new workplace regulation, the bill simply modernizes a law already in place—Title VII, which large companies strongly support.

HR Policy CEO Dan Yager observed: “The Equality Act is consistent with the forward-looking practices that large companies have long embraced.  America’s CHROs and members of HR Policy Association not only urge Congress to pass the Equality Act, but also look forward to helping policy makers throughout the legislative process ensure that the final measure achieves its purpose.”

Outlook: The bill is expected to be passed by the House within the next few months.  Senate action in the current Congress is considered unlikely.
