HR Policy Releases “ESG and the Role of the Chief Human Resources Officer”

March 29, 2019

A new Association white paper synthesizes the findings from interviews with 12 member CHROs on how companies address environmental, social, and governance issues, with a focus on the role of the CHRO.

Companies that participated in the report include CVS Health, Dick’s Sporting Goods, General Mills, HP Inc., ManpowerGroup, Marriott International, The Procter & Gamble Company, and VF Corporation.

The paper finds that among companies:

  • ESG activities are frequently based on longstanding company values;

  • Sustainability approaches (including ESG) are becoming more focused and aligned with corporate strategy; and

  • The following areas take priority when refining ESG strategies:

    • Risk mitigation;
    • Talent attraction and development;
    • Diversity and pay equity;
    • Brand management and public perception;
    • Environmental stewardship;
    • Supply chain conduct and management; and
    • Community support and involvement.

The paper addresses the role of the CHRO in sustainability issues more broadly, including as steward of company culture and company social capital, and as counselor to the CEO.

A special thank you to the HR Policy members who participated.
