In March, ILO Convention 190, which addresses workplace violence and harassment was ratified by the Mexican Senate in efforts to reinforce its commitment to gender equality. The adoption will bring new requirements to Mexican companies in effort to create gender equality and inclusivity from a workforce perspective.
Mexico becomes the 11th country to ratify ILO convention 190 and, according to the Mexican Government press release, “reaffirms [Mexico’s] international commitment to gender equity.” ILO Convention 190 contains several particularly notable provisions, including defining and establishing a gender inclusive approach, definitions of gender violence, harassment, and discrimination, establish of damages for violations, and workplace awareness of violence and harassment.
When the convention is fully implemented into the Mexican legal framework, companies will be required to have ensure their company protocols for workplace discrimination and mechanisms for evaluating psychosocial risk factors at work are in compliance.
