BEERG: EU Parliament Mulls Over Numerous Amendments to Data Protection Regulations

June 29, 2012
As reports circulate that EU Member States have put forward hundreds of amendments to the European Commission's proposed Data Protection Regulation, European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) Peter Hustinx recently urged the EU Parliament to keep the bill intact and not to “cave” to industry concerns that the rules are too “prescriptive.”  According to the BEERG Global Labor Newsletter, the EDPS is an independent supervisory authority devoted to protecting personal data and privacy and promoting good practice in the EU institutions and bodies, and Hustinx’s remarks came as part of his office’s seventh annual report to the EU Parliament.  BEERG's sources indicate that the EU Council, which plays a co-equal role in the legislative process, has outlined numerous revisions to the European Commission's draft General Data Protection Regulation that was originally published in January.
