Bipartisan Age Discrimination Bill Introduced

Published on:

Authors: D. Mark Wilson

Topics:

Lawmakers in the House and Senate introduced the Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (S. 485), which would strengthen protections for older workers under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title VII, and the Rehabilitation Act.

The bill would reverse the 2009 Supreme Court decision in Gross v. FBL Financial Services Inc., which made it harder for workers to prove a claim under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

Outlook: Introduction by Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), chair of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), chair of the Senate Finance Committee, increases the odds the bill could be enacted in this session of Congress.
